Support sought in centers for refugee women and asylum seekers in Belgium
Our colleagues from Javva in Belgium are looking for volunteers who are motivated to lend a hand through the European Solidarity Corps in two centers for refugees.
The Caritas center in Wavre works for vulnerable female asylum seekers, single or with children, and offers a total of 21 apartments. The team supports the residents in legal, social and medical matters.
The aim is to give women maximum autonomy, based on their own capabilities, so that they are ready to start an independent life. Volunteers will work with the team to provide individual support to residents and carry out activities together. Their main task is to guide, inform and motivate families about activities and appointments.
In this project, volunteers help...
...with the organization of the day-care center (babies and toddlers aged 0 to 3 years);
...in activities for children (leading creative and artistic workshops, organizing sports activities, ...);
...at workshops with families to improve communication and harmony in the community (cooking workshop or other activities);
...in individual support for new families (e.g. explaining how to use public transport, ...)
The Fédasil center is 25 km from Brussels and can accommodate up to 220 residents, including 40 unaccompanied minor refugees. There are different types of services offered to residents including social support, medical care, reception, school support and recreational activities.
Tasks of the volunteers in this project
The volunteers are integrated into the leisure service, the aim of which is, on the one hand, to support children and young people in their school education and, on the other hand, to organize leisure activities, mainly in the social and cultural area, for the residents. There are also some activities in the neighborhood aimed at raising awareness in the local community for asylum seekers. You will work with children and with adults.
You should bring flexibility, open-mindedness, empathy, team spirit, interpersonal skills, initiative and good adaptability. You should also be prepared to live in an isolated location and also to face residents of the centers who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Conditions of Participation
Participation in the European Solidarity Corps is free.
Depending on the project, as a volunteer you will be accommodated with families who live close to the center where you will have your own room, or you will live in an apartment in the Wavre area. Kitchen/living area and bathroom are shared with other volunteers, but each has their own bedroom.
For the duration of the voluntary service you will receive a ticket with which you can reach the nearest cities (Ottiginies, Louvain-la-Neuve, Wavre) and Brussels. You will also receive a monthly allowance (approx. €300) for food and monthly pocket money (€120).
You can apply directly for one of the two positions using the links in the text above.
