Volunteering Team at a historic castle ruin in Alsace
A camp useful to the rural community, learning technical skills, exchanging ideas with locals and young people from Alsace, living and cooking together, and discovering the Alsatian Vosges... Sounds good? Then this project is just right for you!
The work in this Volunteering Team includes fortifying the wall of the “western ring wall” of the Château de Salm castle ruins. The “Les Veilleurs de Salm” association would like to complete the castle ruins for the celebrations of the castle's 800th anniversary in 2025.
When?
02nd - 17th August, 2024
The project
The work in this Volunteering Team involves maintenance work on the Salm castle ruins: the aim is to preserve what exists without adding cladding or building over it. The restoration of this wall began almost 15 years ago in collaboration with the French monument services (Monuments Historiques, DRAC).
Specific tasks for you:
-
Removing and replacing one to three layers of trim on both the interior and exterior;
-
Removal of any roots in the panels;
-
removing the old mortar;
-
Creation of a solid “ruin-like” rockwork that connects the two sides of the facade and
-
Work on the external cladding to uncover archaeological material.
The motivated team from “Les Veilleurs de Salm” takes over the technical supervision of this work.
