Supporting Nature 2.0 (Portugal)

Work on a nature conservation project in inland Portugal!

This camp brings together young people from different nationalities, cultures and contexts in Portugal to contribute to a project to increase biodiversity, restore degraded ecosystems and improve the fire resistance of the landscape.

The conservation work will take place in cooperation with the non-profit organization MONTIS - Associação para a Gestão e Conservação da Natureza in Pampilhosa da Serra. The areas where the conservation work will be carried out are ecologically degraded and sensitive areas.

When?

July 8th-17th, 2024

What is it about?

All your tasks are aimed at or related to ecosystem restoration. They include...

  • pruning young trees and pruning and maintaining pine trees and other native species to accelerate their growth (using pruning shears and other cutting tools);

  • clearing and maintaining access paths for volunteers and visitors;

  • restoring riparian vegetation;

  • building barriers against water runoff with local materials to improve the soil in the long term;

  • controlling invasive plant species, especially the acacia species Acacia dealbata (control is done by pulling small trees and girdling medium and large trees);

  • setting up and collecting photo trap cameras that react to movement.
