Join the beach cleanup on Giglio Island!
Giglio Island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and the Cetacean Sanctuary protected area. The crystal clear emerald sea, with its rich and fish-rich seabed, frames an area that is still 90% wild. However, the waves, especially during winter storms, wash up a significant amount of garbage, mainly plastic. Did you know that although the Mediterranean Sea represents less than 1% of the planet's water surface, it is the sixth largest waste accumulation area in the world?
The aim of this camp is therefore to reduce garbage on the island's coast, benefiting the environment and tourism. The camp is organized by our colleagues from Lunaria together with Proloco, a cultural organization whose institutional missions include the enhancement of the natural, cultural and historical resources of Giglio Island and the implementation of initiatives of tourist interest.
When?
May 13-26, 2025
What is it about?
You will collect garbage along the coast of the island together with local volunteers: This includes cleaning the beaches and collecting plastic material in particular (bottles, polystyrene boxes, corks, abandoned fishing tools) for disposal. You will be accompanied to the garbage collection points either by car or on foot along the trekking trails or by boat across the sea, with the garbage always being taken by sea to the landfill by specialist staff.
Register now!
We still have a few free places for volunteers from Germany, so register here to take part in this camp.
Please be aware : You should be able to swim and not get seasick. Some activities take place by boat.
