Birds' El Dorado (Serbia)

Support species protection in a Serbian nature reserve

In 1992, students of the University of Belgrade, members of the Student Biological Research Society “Josif Pancic”, started a scientific research project with the symbolic name “The Return of the Ibis” (“Povratak Ibisa”). It was a project to support the protection and conservation of the Obedska bara nature reserve in the Vojvodina province of Serbia.

Our partner organization in Serbia, the Young Researches of Serbia, is organizing the 23rd international workcamp in Obedska Bara this year. As a volunteer, you will help reduce the negative impact of the reserve's overgrowth. The work of past workcamps has already produced visible results: several bird species have returned and the bird colony is now larger with a stable number of nesting species.

When?

14-27 Aug 2022

The Project

A large depression in the nature reserve was filled in by dense vegetation of white willow, white poplar and ash combined with large amounts of dry foliage, dead branches and trunks, significantly reducing flood flow. Your job is to clear the sink, trim bushes, remove logs and burn the smaller branches.

The best time for this type of activity is August because of the easier access to the valley, which dries up in summer. Also, you will do some cleaning work and collect garbage left in the area after the floods.

The Accommodation

Accommodation is in two renovated houses in the Ethnopark at the end of the village of Kupinovo (about 2500 inhabitants). The houses date from the 19th century. One of them is still completely as it was then - without electricity and running water. You sleep on the floor, mattresses are provided but you must bring a sleeping bag! If you prefer to sleep in a tent, you can bring one and set it up in the large yard.

Food is provided and prepared by a local chef. Some meals are prepared by the volunteers themselves.
