Permaculture Gardening (South Africa)

Our colleagues from South Africa Volunteer Work Camp Association (SAVWA) work with community-based innovation in this permaculture project that aims to encourage young people to promote environmentally friendly lifestyles and practices.

The focus of the project is on developing and implementing environmental awareness of climate change and a sustainable lifestyle.

When?

07.-21. October 2024

What is it about?

During the camp you will work in a 23x8m garden that will provide food for the children at the local community center. You will learn basic skills in sustainable agriculture, gain knowledge about growing food and better understand the challenges of climate change.

The camp starts with a small training session where you can gain skills and experience related to food cultivation, peace and social cohesion. Together with local community members, you will learn valuable tools related to permaculture and food growing to help contribute to community and individual food security.

Local youth, including women and children, have the opportunity to participate in this community-based project that not only promotes permaculture knowledge, but also solidarity and social cohesion. The camp ends with a visit to the local botanical garden.

Soshanguve is a township approximately 30 km north of Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa.

The name Soshanguve is an acronym for Sotho, Shangaan, Nguni and Venda, reflecting the multi-ethnic composition of the population. South Africa's most important African languages can be heard in Soshanguve.

We recommend that all volunteers seek advice from SAVWA when planning their trip to South Africa.
