Autumn outdoor adventure on the orchard meadow

Get involved in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park and work with us on an orchard!

This project is for all adventurers and nature lovers who want to enjoy life in nature in autumn. In October, in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, we will help improve the health and lifespan of an orchard with over 100 different fruit trees and contribute to increasing biodiversity.

When?

October 7th-21st, 2024

What is the project about?

Orchards have been part of the German cultural landscape for centuries and are used both for growing fruit (apples and pears) and for producing hay.

Your task in this project is to prune the trees. This is important because pruning extends the lifespan of the trees and old trees provide a perfect habitat for various animals. Orchards play a crucial role in biodiversity in Central Europe.

We will give you a thorough introduction, as there are a few things to consider. You will climb ladders into the upper parts of the trees, equipped with tools. There may still be some fruit hanging on the trees, so your first task is to harvest it.

You will spend a lot of time outdoors, there will be campfires, improvised cooking, hikes and special nature experiences. Please be prepared that October can be either warm and sunny or quite fresh and rainy. So be sure to bring sturdy shoes (e.g. hiking boots) and suitable work clothes, ideally also rubber boots.

Please also note that ticks can be an issue if you spend a lot of time outdoors in Germany - like at this camp.

You will sleep and stay at a youth camp site about 50 meters from the orchard.

So this camp will be a real outdoor adventure, because in October the weather is probably already autumnal. There are showers and toilets in a house and a barn where you can stay. In heavy rain you can also stay here overnight if necessary. There is a gas cooker outside for cooking.

You don't have to bring a tent, but a sleeping bag, a sleeping mat, warm, weatherproof clothing and sturdy shoes are required.
